Das Gerät
A father-son conversation about typos and accidental German.

* * *

I'm sitting here on a Sunday evening explaining how I made this website to my son.

He's already taken an interest in it, making a bookmarking in his school Chromebook.

"What is it for?" he asked me.

"It's for daddy to write down things that he finds interesting, that I want to share with others who might find them interesting too. Could be about work, things about stuff I've read, just life, or anything in between."

"Why is it called Gerat?" he said, "Is that an artist name?"

That's funny. No, I thought. It did vaguely remind me of the painting by Jacques Louis David called the 'Death of Marat'

I was prompted to look up if there was, in fact, a definition of "gerat". Strangely enough there was.

In German:

"Gerät" is a German noun that translates to device, tool, appliance, or equipment. It can refer to various types of instruments or machinery used in different contexts, such as:

- Electronic devices: "Please turn off your electronic devices"
- Kitchen utensils: Pots, pans, and other kitchen tools
- Sports equipment: Gymnastics apparatus like bars and rings
- Medical instruments: Devices used for examining human tissues or substances

"No," I told him, "it's just daddy making a typo and deciding to keep it."

He laughed. I did too.
